Maison aux 365 fenêtres
La « maison Brunet » (du nom de son premier propriétaire, 1825), de vastes proportions, typique de l’habitat des canuts, est célèbre à Lyon pour ses 365 fenêtres (elle en compte, en fait, 378). Des considérations cosmologiques sont attachées à cet immeuble qui comporte autant d’appartements que de semaines (52) et autant d’entrées (4) que de saisons… Pendant l’insurrection de 1834, un coup de feu étant parti d’une de ses fenêtres en direction du poste militaire installé aux Chartreux, l’immeuble eût été mitraillé et canonné par la troupe sans intervention du curé de Saint-Bruno ; un ex-voto à Fourvière représente cet épisode.
The 365-window house
The vast "maison Brunet" (named after its first owner in 1825), a typical example of a canut silk-workers residence, is famous in Lyon for its 365 windows (in fact there are 378 of them). It is known for its cosmological connotations and has as many apartments (52) as there are weeks in the year and as many entrances (4) as there are seasons... During the revolt of 1834, a shot was fired from one of its windows towards the military post located in the Chartreux and the building would have been peppered with machine-gun fire and canon-balls if it hadn't been for the intervention of the vicar of Saint-Bruno; an offering at Fourvière relates this episode.
