L’Église Saint-Nizier
Saint-Nizier, au cœur de la cité marchande, représentait le pouvoir municipal des bourgeois face au pouvoir religieux des chanoines de Saint-Jean : c’est ici que l’on proclamait l’élection des consuls et des échevins. Elle fut reconstruite au XVe siècle en style gothique flamboyant et on lui adjoinit à la fin du XVIe siècle un merveilleux portail central avec son « cul de four » Renaisance à têtes d’anges. Enfin, l’architecte Benoit construisit en 1855 le pignon central et elle clocher ajouré sud. Parmi les richeses intérieures, l’horloge perchée au centre de la voûte est remarquable.
Saint-Nizier’s Church
In the heart of the merchants’ quarter, St Niziers’ church represented the burghers’ municipal authority in contrast to the religious power of the canons of St John's Cathedral on the other side of the Saône ; it was here that the elections of consuls and aldermen were proclaimed. The church was rebuilt in the 15tg century in the Flamboyant Gothic style, and in the late 16th century received hte addition of a marvelous central portal with its Renaissance coffered oven vault decorated with angel heads. Finally, in 1855, the architect Benoit built the central gable and the traceried spire of the southern belltower. Among the treasures to be seen inside the church, notice the clock perched in the middle of the vault.
