Amphithéâtre des Trois Gaules
Construit en 12 avant Jésus-Christ, agrandi vers 120 sous l’empereur Hadrien, il pouvait contenir vingt mille places. Ici, à proximité du sanctuaire fédéral et de l’autel de Rome et d’Auguste, se réunissaient chaque année les représentants des soixante-quatre nations des trois Gaules. Ici également, en 177, furent livrés aux supplices les premiers martyrs chrétiens de Gaule ; parmi eux, le nom de sainte Blandine est aujourd’hui le plus connu.
The amphitheatre of the Three Gauls
Built in 12 BC and enlarged around 120 AD under the reign of Emperor Hadrian, this amphitheatre seated up to twenty thousand people. This is where, near to the federal sanctuary and the temple of Rome and of Augustus, the representatives of the sixty-four nations of the Three Gauls would meet every year. It is also here that in 177 the first Christian martyrs of Gaul were tortured, the most famous to this date being Saint Blandine.
