La Cathédrale Saint-Jean
On l’appelle aussi la Primatiale : l’évêque de Lyon porte en effet, depuis 1079, le titre de « Primat des Gaules ». Construite entre le XIIe siècle (chevet roman) et le XVe siècle (façade), elle a abrité, avant même d’être achevée, deux conciles en 1245 et 1274. Elle renferme une horloge astronomique, du XVIe siècle, qui s’anime à 12, 14, 15 et 16 heures, et de multiples trésors d’architecture (chapelle des Bourbon, XVe siècle), de vitraux, de sculptures et de tableaux. On peut remarquer les 320 médaillons quadrilobés de la façade (XIVe siècle) qui mêlent l’histoire, la Bible et les légendes du temps.
St John’s Cathedral
St John’s Cathedral is also known as the «Primatiale» since the bishop of Lyon has held the title of «Primate of the Gauls» since 1079. Built between the 12th (Romanesque chevet) and 15th (façade) centuries, the cathedral had already hosted two councils in 1245 and 1274 before it was completed. It includes a 16th century astronomical clock which springs to life on the hour between 12 noon and 4 o'clock in the afternoon, numerous treasures such as the 15th century Bourbons’ Chapel, stained glass windows, sculptures and paintings. Notice the 320 quadrifoiled medallions of the façade (14th century) blending history, biblical scenes and contemporary legend.
