Vestiges de Saint-Étienne et de Sainte-Croix
Dédié à Girard Désargues, célèbre mathématicien né dans le quartier (1591-1661), ce petit jardin public conserve les traces de deux églises démolies après la Révolution et qui, avec la primatiale Saint-Jean, constituaient le « groupe cathédral » de Lyon : Saint-Étienne, où fut intégré le premier baptistère lyonnais, du IVe siècle, dont on reconnaît la cuve octogonale, et Sainte-Croix, église paroissiale, dont une arcade avait été prise dans des immeubles édifiés au XIXe siècle et a pu être remontée à son emplacement d’origine.
Remains of the Saint-Étienne and Sainte-Croix churches
Dedicated to Girard Désargues, a famous mathematician born in the district (1591-1661), this small public garden shows the traces of the churches demolished after the French Revolution and which, with the primate church of Saint Jean, formed the Lyon “cathedral group”: Saint-Étienne dating back to the 4th century with its octagonal chamber and where the first Lyon baptistery was housed, and the Sainte-Croix parish church, one of the arches of which was integrated into some houses built in the 19th century and was subsequently re-erected in its original location.
