Le Cloître de la Déserte
La place Sathonay a été créée à l’emplacement du cloître de l’abbaye de la Déserte, fondée par des clarisses en 1304, et passée à la règle bénédictine en 1501. Au centre de la place, la statue de pierre du sergent Blandan, héros de l’Armée d’Afrique, par Tajana (1960), remplace celle dont le bronze fut fondu sous l’occupation allemande. De part et d’autre de l’escalier, les deux bâtiments et les lions sculptés par Lemot en 1823 marquaient l’entrée de l’ancien « Jardin des Plantes » situé au-dessus.
The Déserte cloister
Place Sathonay was created on the former site of the cloister of the Déserte abbey, founded by the Clarisses in 1304 and then handed over to the Benedictines in 1501. In the centre of the square, Tajana's stone statue of Sergeant Blandan (1960), hero of the African Army, was built to replace the statue whose bronze was melted down under the German occupation. On both sides of the steps, the two buildings and lions sculpted by Lemot in 1823 marked the entrance to the former "Jardin des Plantes" situated just above.
